Search Engine Optimization Evolution

After giving a very brief idea about SEO, I hope, I made it to that people understand the relevance of SEO. It was just a basic info for the beginners, there is lot more to explain and retain.  So, here we’ll be gaining in-depth knowledge about SEO and to get mastery in this field, we must have core knowledge for this.
 
While sitting on my work desk composing, it just came into my head that “How this Search Engine Optimization came into its origin”, “Who are the great bodies behind it”, “How this has been evolved” and “What are the communities following”? So before start discussing more detailed terms of SEO, which of course you might have heard like Keywords Research, Page Ranking, On-Page optimization, Off-Page optimization, HTML Tags, we must know the background story.

Let’s take a tour to the History of SEO that is no short, in fact it is across the board. SEO History at a glance from 1993 up till 2012:

1993 – Dawn of modern internet – Netscape Navigator(Browser).

1994 APRIL – (Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle) Yahoo launched its Web directory. Also the world’s first full text index of the web launched, Web Crawler.

1994 JULY – Excite & Lycos launched.

1995 FEBRUARY – Infoseek launched and it became default search engine of Nestcape Navigator later.

1995 AUGUST – Initiating the browser wars, Internet Explorer launched.

1995 SEPTEMBER – Hotbot and Looksmart launched where Hotbot was powered by Inktomi engine. Also, Yahoo partners with open text to provide crawler based search results other than its human powered directory.

1995 DECEMBER – Altavista launched with an index and it became the most popular search engine, indicated the decline of search engine submission and influenced on-page SEO.

1996 – Yahoo re-launched its search engine which was mechanized by Altavista.

1997 – Algorithm cracking software developed that helped SEO in generating page rankings as required.

1997 APRIL – Askjeeves launched.

1998 – Several papers began to hint the use of link citations in search engine algorithms.

1998 JUNE – DMOZ launched. To get listed in DMOZ was the key goal for many SEO’s.

1998 SEPTEMBER – Google launched.

1998 OCTOBER – Inktomi powered MSN’s search debut.

1999 OCTOBER – Altavista changed to an internet portal after losing market share to google.

1999 NOVEMBER – Danny Sullivan moderated the first ever SEO Conference, Search Engine Strategies in San Francisco.

2000 JUNE – Yahoo dropped Altavista and started using Google search results.

2000 OCTOBER – Teoma search engine launched, with a capability of page topic evaluation. Also Google Adwords launched with CPM(Cost per mille)/(Cost per thousand impressions) model.

2000 DECEMBER – Google toolbar enabling SEO to view their page ranks.

2001 OCTOBER – Askjeeves acquired Teoma and used its algorithm to power its search engine.

2009 – Google Introduced Caffeine Algorithm.

2009 – Bing and Yahoo Merged

2011 – Panda Algorithm Update.

2012 APRIL– Penguin Algorithm Update

2012 SEPTEMBER – EMD Update (Exact Match Domain)

2012 OCTOBER – 65 Pack Rollout

You might have heard about SEO a lot, these days, but there are very few people who are aware of this term SEO, which plays a vital role for any organization or a corporate agency or a government agency having a website, web page or web portal or e-commerce site. It has become utmost requirement to enhance the visibility of your web page.

Now, Let us understand first, what exactly does SEO mean? SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is a technique of optimizing your website, so that it is appearing at a higher position/rank, which is possible by bringing more and more traffic to your website at its optimum level via Google Search Engine.  It simply means a process of increasing the visibility of your web page and generating maximum traffic through various ways.

Like, just to make it easy to understand, when you search any particular word or a phrase on Google search engine. It pop-ups lot of web link pages in front of you, from which you choose where to get the right and appropriate information as per your need. And all those query result pages are ranked according to search engine optimization is done on it.
